When I first started translating my little drawings into cross stitch, I used Caron Collection Watercolours a lot. I love the color changes of over-dyed fibers. You also get a lot of bang for your buck, because you use one strand (of three) to stitch and there are ten yards in each skein. That's 30 yards of stitching fun!
This is when I introduced the idea of contour stitching. Rather than stitch in horizontal rows, like we all did back in the day, I wanted the color changes to emphasize the shape they were creating. I began stitching around the outline of a shape and spiraling in to the center. This doesn't create the same flat smooth finish as stitching by the row, but the movement of color to form the shape is more important to me. Try it! Vintage chart with photo glued to front.
